Women’s health - physical & mental

May 28 is observed as International Day of Action for Women's Health since 1987. The main goal of the celebration of this day is to raise awareness on the issues related to women’s health and well being. In keeping with the spirit,  EVESCAPE compiles opinions of a few prominent medical practitioners in Goa to mark the occasion.

On this occasion, I urge every single woman to put her needs before others -- health wise. Physical, emotional, spiritual, as well as financial health is of utmost significance. Women need to be strong enough to make their own decisions and work towards being self reliant while supporting others. Anemia and calcium deficiency is common amongst women, both urban and rural. This needs to be addressed at to prevent further issues. Stress and hormonal issues need timely intervention. Menopausal women as well as young menstruating girls need special care and attention. Wishing all of us a safe and healthy future!

Harriet Beecher Stowe said, "A woman's health is her capital". A woman's health broadly covers her physical, mental and spiritual health. Healthy habits are the best ways to avoid illness, prolong life and live more happily. But in the chaos of a woman's daily life, healthy living may take back seat to chores, work, busy schedules and more. A nourishing diet is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. Thus, eating a balanced diet starts with avoiding unhealthy food and drinking a lot of water. Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent infirmity and keep your ticker strong. It is also beneficial for your mental and bone health. Mix routines and keep your exercise plans exciting by trying different activities. One should also make sure to maintain personal hygiene and visit your doctor regularly for checkups and screening.

No one should undermine the capabilities of women. From being a housewife to piloting a fighter jet, women have accomplished everything. If the woman is strong, she can see through or get through any difficult situation. She can take care of herself, take care of her husband, in-laws, her children or relatives and almost everybody. She can be very docile as well as a very strong courageous, brave woman. On this international Women's Health Day all the women should take care of themselves first starting from eating nutritious food to cultivating your hobbies to keep yourself busy.  With physical, mental and spiritual health is equally important. Women should give time for herself, for implementing new ideas -- all this along with routine house work.

Women can have it all as multitaskers, they say -- but remember not all at the same time. Do set your own priorities. Put a stop to the ‘burnt chop syndrome’. Be disciplined to pay attention to your diet, exercise and leave time for refreshment of mind, body and spirit. Everything will fall in place when you are fit and healthy.

Women's health concerns are numerous and influenced by various factors like gender disparities, early marriage, abuse,  malnutrition, poverty and illiteracy. The highest is Anaemia which is wide spread despite having various policies and programmes. Health concerns of women should be the  priority for policy makers, thereafter its proper implementation is key.

We women are so busy giving and doing for others that we almost feel guilty to take that time out for ourselves. Women’s health is unique in many ways. They need more health care and mainly more access to health care facilities. In addition to their reproductive and sexual health needs, they also face serious health issues like cancers, osteoporosis and mental illnesses. Women need to prioritise their health, make time for themselves and never take health for granted.

Women's health is a global concern. But it is in a pathetic state in India. Women are just seen as a commodity and not as an individual or a contributor to the nation. A woman is a creator, and her reproductive health is to be given utmost priority. However menstruation is still a taboo in India and no policies yet have succeeded to break this altogether. The government should Accord highest priority to women's health and well being.

There is no denying the importance of our health, but we've all been guilty of putting it on the back burner.  Whether it be for our families, a job, or an over-indulgent weekend with friends -- it's easy to forget the importance of our health, physical fitness and mental well-being as we manage the stress and joys of every day life. Sleep well, exercise regularly, do regular health checks, call a friend, give some me time, most importantly love yourself.
